It's very cool for the time of year in Italy (18°C + rain in Rome, 16° + rain in Milan and snow in the mountains) so the nocturnal Scops Owl is keeping herself and her brood warm while she sleeps:

Image

The chicks are growing rapidly and they already spill out from under her wings :-) - she looks as though she's floating on a soft white cloud...

Thanks to Simaghe from the Italian forum for the pic.

The markings remind me of the bark on a tree

KF 'Bark' was one of the names suggested for the male! Now I think it may be one for the chicks. Here they are without Mum - they're getting big and look well-fed

Hi all. Checked in on SWR site this am and saw this view. Not sure but I think it doesnt look good? Did something happen to one of the chicks or the parent? Their pages have to be translated. Didnt see anything commenting on view though.

I've translated the page but they don't make any comment about problems - rather, they're very happy because all three young owls have fledged. They say that it may take some time before they become fully independent and leave the area but that's all. The message is also an "Arriverderci to next year" message, thanking everyone for their support.

I'm always passing this nest on my way to look in on the Italian kestrels, so this morning I decided to take a look...

What a cute family of owls! And I love the bark (oops, I mean feathers) of the adult...such a unique pattern.
