Video: The Black Eagle Project

From the website:

“The Black Eagle Cam is situated in the Walter Sisulu National Botanical Gardens, in Johannesburg, South Africa. The camera is a joint project supported by a number of sponsors including Africam. The projects aims are to create awareness and support for the Black Eagle Project. In 1998 the Black Eagle Project was set up as an affiliated to the Walter Sisulu National Botanical Garden and was registered as an independent, Section 21, non-profit organization. The project consists of a 7 member committee and approximately 30 dedicated volunteer members. What is so significant about this project is that these eagles are the last of a once much larger population that inhabited the mountain ridges of Johannesburg. Due to the expansion of the city of Johannesburg their habitat and food source has come under threat. This specific nesting site has been documented as far back as the early 1940’s and it is estimated that the current mating pair are the third or fourth descendants from the first documented nesting pair. ”

This year the couple of White Tailed Eagles in de Oostvaarders plassen have raised one eaglet, a female.
A video of the banding : http://nos.nl/video/159481-zeearendjong-gefilmd.html
This is the sixth eaglet born to this couple.
As you can see the nest is a very remote area of the wildlife refuge. They had to wade through the watery bog for over 30 minutes to get there.
Quite understandable that they can't put a web cam in the nest . . . . .

In another wildlife refuge, Lauwersmeer http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lauwersmeer
another couple has nested but their egg(s) did not hatch. It apparently is a young couple so there is good hope for a better result next year.

I mainly wrote about these Eagles on the Main forum:

Video: Who Will Feed This Hungry Eaglet?

First parent arrives and leaves (no feeding). Second parent (or perhaps it’s the same one) arrives and finally feeds this hungry youngster.

Video: Beautiful Morning with Birdsong

This video was recorded around 10 AM, Estonian time. The shadows across the gently rocking nest and the sound of the wind and birds is very special.

Video: Lesser Spotted Eagle Nest in Latvia

June 27, 2010: How exciting to find an active Lesser Spotted Eagle nest! This one is located in Latvia. There is also one in Estonia, but no chicks this year. The video was recorded around 10 PM, Latvian time, and the light is fading.

Aquila pomarina

The cam was set up as a research project to study the diet of the Lesser Spotted Eagle in Latvia. Here is the site: http://www.pomarina.lv/

There are two ways to watch this nest: Copy and paste this address into Windows Movie Player: mms://video1.lanet.lv/ligzda

You can also watch the nest from the Estonian site, which says “Our lesser spotted eagles didn't have success with their breeding this year. But so we can pay more attention to the camera of our Latvian neighbours. Things haven't been easy there either - the parents lay on one egg, the second one was crushed.” Click on the Direct Stream here: http://www.looduskalender.ee/en/node/7500

Video: How Do I Eat This?

Evening, and this eaglet is hungry. But how to eat the prey found in the nest? Certainly not like a Barn Owl--

8:30 PM in Latvia:

We need to limit our time watching this cam, so that the Latvian researchers can have access. The cam accommodates just a few people at one time. I limited myself to 15 - 20 minutes, not watching every day. Now I've changed that to 10 minutes. Also, I removed the link to the cam in my videos on YouTube.

That is very courteous, beans. We'll let you be our eyes to the nest. Thanks!

I would like to see the research on food brought to the nest, not a day-by-day record, but a summary. I've seen a frog in the nest, and something furry with a tail. And cygnets.

And I'd like to see results of the blood test, if the eaglet is banded. He would also be weighed, which would be interesting to compare with Bald Eagles. And the sex of the bird, which can be determined by blood test or one feather plucked. And temperature, if that is part of the exam. It should be very brief, so as not to raise the stress level of the eaglet or parents. At the bird hospital, our goal is five minute exams. The birds we get are sick or injured (not counting abandoned baby birds) and stress can depress their immune systems, something to avoid.

Here's something you didn't know about me. Before I worked at the bird hospital, getting a blood test would make me light-headed and an IV was pure heck. Well, a blood test is part of the exam of every bird at the hospital as it tells us so much. I can remember holding a bird who had to have an IV via a small vein on his leg. When it was over, I went outside, sat in a chair, leaned over, and put my head between my knees. It was then and there that I decided I would be absolutely useless if I didn't get over that aversion. So I did. And yes, now I can get a blood test without getting pale and shaky.

Well, beans, you have been the recipient of a wonderful lesson from our feathered friends. They teach us so much, don't they? Their lives are so hard and we are lucky to observe and learn from them.

Video: Breakfast at the Lesser Spotted Eagle Nest

Recorded around 6:00 AM. I'm not sure of the prey. I was lucky to catch it!
