Thank you to all who voted for the Wildlife Center of Virginia on the ASI Govt. Charity contest. And thank you to all who have supported the Center - in all ways. :-)

Thank you to all who have been voting for the Wildlife Center of Virginia on the ASI Govt. Charity contest. The Wildlife Center is now in 4th place with 486 votes - a far cry from the leader with over 3,200. We really need to get everyone voting every day if we stand a chance of winning $10,000 for the Center. Please share the link with your family and friends - either by your facebook page - or by e-mails. If we could just get a large amount pushing for a couple of days - we could make a difference. Thank you to all who have supported the Center - in all ways. :-)

Here is the link for voting - it only takes seconds and you can vote each day. The end of the contest is December 3rd. http://www.asigovernment.com/ASI_VoteForYourCharity.cfm

Thanks for the reminder. I just voted again, and the Wildlife Center is now up to 497 votes.

But there's still a long way to go to catch up to and pass the leader.

The Center now has 661 votes. Thank you so much to everyone who has been voting. As you see, we could sure use more people voting each day - so, please share the link with family and friends and ask them to support the Wildlife Center. Thank you! To vote, please visit: http://www.asigovernment.com/ASI_VoteForYourCharity.cfm

The Center posted this information on Thanksgiving: Thanksgiving Update: Two additional guests showed up — a Deer Mouse from Albemarle County, and a Black Vulture from Augusta County — both admitted on Thanksgiving Day. For complete story, please visit the Center's link: http://www.wildlifecenter.org/wp/thanksgiving-dinner-2010/

Can any of you here involved with conservation and rehabilitation of wildlife help recent member bureax with the following question? (It was posted earlier today under "Wildlife Cams," but I thought it would have more responses if it was moved here.)

Thanks! And a big thanks and welcome to bureax for joining us here on this forum!

What degree is required to get into a Wildlife organization? I'm a college freshman, my mayor is zoology. I'm interested in getting into a wildlife organization, defending animals. Like the WWF, or the Defenders of Wildlife, or Sea Shepard, or other organization that protects animals. But I'm also interested in scientific research on animals, like studying them. Any suggestions.

For Bureax -
I would suggest you contact The Wildlife Center of Virginia. I'm not sure which state you are located in, but they might be able to give you some advice, since they intern and have connections with other wildlife foundations/rehabs/hospitals, etc. Their e-mail is: [email protected]

Or contact your Department of Game and Inland Fisheries in your state. I hope this helps.

Today is the last day to vote for the Center on the ASI contest. Thank you to everyone who voted. We were picking up steam - but unfortunately, short of a miracle where 2600 votes are cast in one day - looks like the Center will remain in 4th place. Thank you to everyone!!

Although the Center didn't receive enough votes to win - it is wonderful the Disabled Vets was able to receive the $10,000. Thank you so very much to all who voted - it was appreciated so much!! Everyone was really pulling at the end - you all were amazing!!

I'm sorry we couldn't pull the Wildlife Center of VA up into 1st place. It would be nice if the top 5 received a little something each.

Bureax,

You might want to also check the job boards for those organizations that you are interested in. The Nature Conservancy usually has a broad variety of jobs, so that would be a good one as well. The researchers I work with at the Center for Conservation Biology at CCB and Department of Game and Inland Fisheries usually have a masters degree in biology. I would think zoology would be even better. CCB has a very good masters program if you are interested.

Yesterday was a different kind of rescue for my group. I got called Sunday about a hawk stuck in a parking garage of an apartment building for 2 days. The building is on the James River, only a few blocks from where the falcons live. After calls to animal control and DGIF, I had no solution. I contacted a bander on the eastern shore who I've never met. He responded with a contact in Richmond, who coincidentally has two ladies that are members of my rehab group licensed under him for banding. They usually net and band songbirds. With his guidance and a bait trap, we met at the parking garage. It was a Cooper's Hawk, flying all around us on the top floor of the garage, with no way out.

We loaded the bait trap with a rat I bought at a pet store. We put it down and waited for 3 hours. The hawk was interested, but not hungry enough to land on the trap. We decided to try one of their nets across an opening that the hawk was frequently flying through. The net was not designed to capture large birds. He flew into and out of the net four times, but on the fifth try we got him! He was aggressive and lively, so we crated him and took him out to the river for a beautiful release.

I invited one of the news stations who came in the morning, and for the release (I was interviewed too). The story was on three times last night, but unfortunately not posted on their website. Here are a few shots:

Wonderful outcome ObxBarb! Patience and clever thinking pays off again. Beautiful and lucky hawk. I really enjoyed reading about this rescue with such a great outcome.

Do any of you know when the first wildlife sanctuary was established? There is a question from a 4th grader under "Other Wildlife" that the answer is needed for a school project. If you know or know where the answer could be found, please post here:

Barb Walker bought this to my attention. I'm sure Barb will add much more to the tragic situation...not only Ospreys...this includes Pelicans and Gulls.
