I am so sad to read that the eggs are gone - I thought there was something wrong, since the nest was empty and looked as if it had been disturbed. Poor Phoebe - she has had such a hard year.

I just read your post in Breaking News Beth. I wonder if this had anything to do with the crows. The gentleman whose house Phoebe lives at set up a ladder to which he tied rope to at 10" intervals....maybe 3 days ago- to protect the nest from the crows or possibly other predators. I sure hope she doesn't encounter predation problems.

Well, we will have to look forward to the next clutch. Good luck Phoebe.

New camera angle on the nest. I haven't seen Phoebe, but I haven't really been watching. The chat group gives no clue as they are discussing Sloppy Joes :P

edited to add; Comment from Pungh; he will position the camera when he sees Phoebe start a new nest so she must be starting to construct.

There is a new website called Phoebe's Place. It has a video of Phoebe laying the 2nd egg (the one that Beth got the great pic of) and has some comments from Pungh about the loss of eggs.

After all the excitement of Phoebe getting her nest ready and laying the two eggs, it's just too sad to hear about their loss. I can't help but think that some predator attacked the nest and destroyed the eggs, which Phoebe then cast out of the nest.

I was all set for a better season than the last one, but already it's not looking very promising.

Phoebe is putting the finishing spiderwebs on her new nest.
The owner of the house, Pungh, uploaded a video of a surprise "attack" from a hummer he called " the coward Hummer de'Ville".

** Nest-building, incubation, and care of the young are entirely the responsibility of the female, and observations of male hummingbirds at nests usually suggest courtship or territoriality.

Love the hummer image Mick-sweet!!

Nail biting time...according to chat, he's putting up some type of crow/large bird deterrent to protect the nest...that bush was really shaking...

Image

During a lull in the ladder action, Phoebe returned...but took off after what sounded like another hummer...she quickly returned, but just couldn't get comfortable..
